What Is Positive Thinking? Benefits For Homeschooling
If you’re wondering what is positive thinking and what the advantages are when it comes to homeschooling, see how changing the way you look at things will make your days at home with the children much less stressful and more enjoyable.
What Is Positive Thinking?
I have some good news! There is ALWAYS an alternative way of looking at something – and, if you choose to do so, your life as a homeschooling Mom will be so much easier.
A lot of the reason we homeschooling Moms feel anxious is that we worry about what might happen.
- What if my child never learns to read?
- What if they never get the qualifications they deserve?
- What if they’re ‘behind’ other children?
And behind that anxiety is the fear of failure. That’s why I recommend Susan Jeffers Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway as number one on my list of self-care books for homeschooling Moms.
If we can imagine an alternative scenario where things go well then our worries subside and our happiness increases.
Positive thinking isn’t about denying what’s in front of you. It’s about realizing that you have a choice.
Do you look at problems in a way that adds to your worries or do you focus on what is good and positive?
Positivity
Positivity is an extremely powerful tool that will transform your homeschool.
Science shows that it’s not what actually happens that influences us, it’s the way we think about what happens.
Here’s an article on the health benefits of positive thinking in case you needed any more encouragement!
When you’re homeschooling, it’s easy to react to your child not learning Math by plunging into a spiral of worry and frustration, based on the fear that they are never going to learn and you can’t teach them.
Ouch!
When you challenge the way you look at what’s happened in a more relaxed and positive way, it will be much easier for both you and your child to find the solution.
There’s often a practical reason. like tiredness, the fact that what they’re learning isn’t that interesting (grab a few fun learning activities – educational games are great learning tools), or maybe you aren’t in the mood!
Catastrophying is something we are all prone to – so use some positive thinking to put things in balance and give yourself a break.
Homeschooling: Why Positive Thinking Is An Advantage
You can apply the lessons of positive thinking in many situations when you are homeschooling.
Not only will it make you feel better, but it will stop things blowing up and help your child learn better too!
Here are some practical ways you can train yourself to use positive thinking in your homeschool.
Turn Failures Into Positives
Look how Sheryl has used this to help her son with reading:
“Last weekend my son was really disheartened with his reading and said he was embarrassed that he was getting things wrong and learning was taking so long,
I told him he needs to remember the ones he is getting right as that is what’s important. We should celebrate what we have learnt and we will look at the rest another time.
Failures happen ALL THE TIME it is part of life but we need to focus on what’s going right and be grateful for it. It’s all to do with teaching ourselves and our babies positive thinking.”

Start The Day Off Right
Beginning your day in a positive way makes a big difference in creating a happy atmosphere where learning is fun.

Remember to Breathe
Staying positive is much easier when you’re calm! As your homeschooling day unfolds it will have its ups and downs.
When you’re about to lose it, remember to relax with these simple breathing exercises.
Journaling
If you’re wondering what is positive thinking and how it can help, try journaling! Getting your thoughts down on paper is a great way to see where your mind is wandering and catch it before it goes too far down the well.
Try writing some affirmations in your journal; you’ll soon see what a benefit they can be to how you feel.

Whatever happens, I’ll handle it.
Staying Positive: Achievements
One of the fabulous benefits of positive thinking is to encourage you to start writing your achievements.
See how it’s helped other homeschool Moms and a list of what they feel they’ve achieved here.
“I sat and thought about how when you focus on achievements, you think about the things that really matter – intangible things – enjoying the sun, nature, being kind, pouring yourself into someone else.”

Use Positive Thinking To Get Through The Day
“I’ve learnt to be able to “Go with the flow” and it does help as it just takes the edge of things. I can stay calm and know I will come out the other end and be able to look back thinking it wasn’t as bad as I thought .”

This is just one example of how Nelly uses positive thinking to help with homeschooling.
Here’s some more help from homeschool Moms Samie and Angie:
“I try and apply the mantra’s ‘that everything happens for reason’ and ‘what will be, will be‘.
I am a worrier and that does tend to make me more negative when analysing situations and possible outcomes, but I am trying to go more with the flow as they say, and I do use the ‘stop’ mechanism and the distraction method of singing or listening to music so I can then return to my thought process later more positively.”
~ Samie, Courageous Homeschooling Facebook group
“As a Christian, one thing that comes up a lot in bible study is that if you are praying for an answer to a prayer, pray as if the prayer has already been answered. Instead of asking for it, be thankful for whatever it is you are praying for as if you already have it.
I have heard motivational speakers and fitness coaches use this same technique. ”

Benefits Of Positive Thinking
“I have faith all will work out okay in most situations. That’s not to say I don’t worry… As I’m falling asleep most nights I say aloud “No” because my thoughts are going somewhere I don’t want to think about.
My husband is used to this now and just ignores me as he knows what I’m doing , ha!”
