Power Of Positivity: Daily Achievements
A great way for us homeschooling Moms to give ourselves the credit we deserve is to harness the power of positivity. We need to start noticing all those things, both big and small, that we achieve in a day – and give ourselves a pat on the back.
“After writing down my achievements today I really feel like I’ve accomplished something and I can enjoy a relaxing evening with no guilt! Honestly I’m pretty pleased with myself because normally these simple things are such a struggle for me.
Thanks Sonya it’s a great idea and it’s really helped xx ” ~ Lorraine, Courageous Homeschooling Facebook group
Writing down your successes through the day is a brilliant way to start re-programming yourself to feel positive – and get the happiness you deserve.
There’s all sorts of evidence that we tend to do ourselves down all the time. If you’re like me you only ever remember the bad things that happen or something you could have done better. That gives you a very distorted mirror to look in. Especially first thing in the morning!
The great news is that we have the strength within us to shut down the voice which makes us feel bad and turn up the volume on the good.
That’s bound to make you feel happier!
The Power Of Positivity
As homeschooling Moms we’re in need of all the help we can get.
There’s so much to have a go at yourself about – did you lose it because the children got up late? Are you doing enough to help your child progress? Have they seen enough of their friends?
As these thoughts swirl endlessly around you may think you’re stuck on an endless treadmill of worry.
So let’s throw in some science.
The way you feel – and how happy you are – is very much dependent on how you THINK. Research suggests:
- 50% of how we feel is down to inherited genetics (which we can’t do anything about)
- 10% experience
- But a whopping 40% is how we DEAL with life experiences – what our thoughts and behavior are
That means you have enormous scope for changing the way you feel about life – and making yourself happy!
Daily Achievements
One of the best ways I have found to make myself feel good is to write down a list of what I have achieved that day.
So I started keeping a Happiness Journal.

Happiness Journal for Homeschooling Moms
Because the Happiness Journal has beautiful quotes specially selected by 2,000 members of my Courageous Homeschooling Facebook group I know I’m already in the place to start my day off well!
The important thing is to give yourself the praise you deserve.
Think of yourself as your own best friend.
What would you say to be encouraging and helpful?
You would undoubtedly appreciate all the things your friend has done – often things they haven’t really noticed themselves!
So I make sure I think of everything – big or small – that I can say well done to.
What Are The Benefits?
You may be wondering whether writing down your achievements is worth it given everything else you’ve got to fit into your day.
Here are some of the things members of the Courageous Homeschooling Facebook group said after trying it:
“It’s so good, I feel super positive this morning now. The girls and I attended a mindfulness class and we were told about the negative voice in our minds that feeds on our negative thoughts and how we have to try and reduce those by doing exactly what you have just showed me to do ,” ~ Samie, Courageous Homeschooling Facebook group
What Homeschool Moms Write
I ran this as one of the lessons in my Homeschool Happiness Challenge and I thought you might be inspired to join in by seeing how easy it is – and what a difference it makes to how you feel:
Samie’s List:

- Praised girls as they were working on their Math as some questions were particularly difficult – BOOSTING CONFIDENCE
- Started pilates and yoga with the girls – WELL DONE xx” ~ Samie
“Gosh what a great list Samie I love the way you’ve turned everything into the positives that they are 🙂 Well done you way to go xx” ~ Sonya
Jeni’s List:
- * lit the fire myself for the first time in over a fortnight
- * baked cookies
- * fed my kids
- * made arrangements for friends visits
- * had friends over
- * shared plans and dreams for the year
- * not let the fire go out
- * got my eyebrows tidied up and back on duty
Bianka’s List:
Today I have…
- Cleaned the garden beds, Good
- Praised my son for making dinner, Amazing
- Took a nap without feeling guilty, Well done
- Started reading a book without wanting to jump up and do something else, Well done
- Tried to not worry and feel anxious, Almost there.
Your list will be very different but whatever you write celebrating the achievements in your day has got to be a step in the right direction.
What’s more, we know the science behind the power of positivity which proves that when you think about something that makes you happy, your brain releases endorphins, which give you a feeling of well-being.
“I really enjoyed the happiness challenge. It’s really nice to have a list of accomplishments, rather than an unfinished To Do list.” ~ Jennifer
“I sat and thought about how when you focus on achievements, you think about the things that really matter – intangible things – enjoying the sun, nature, being kind, pouring yourself into someone else.” ~ Beth
